HAPPY 12th BIRTHDAY TO CAITLIN!!!!!!!!!!!

I can not believe it has been since September since I have updated!
Yikes!

We have been doing so much. Theater, basketball, girl scouts......it never stops!

THEATER: Caitlin was the Sour Kangaroo in Suessical at the Starlight Theater and then we were both in Fiddler on the Roof (she was a daughter and I was Fruma Sara/Ensemble). Then we took a break from the Starlight for a while and she auditioned for some other companies and ended up choosing to do Oliver with the Lakeland Players, and of course I joined too! So she is an orphan and I am Old Annie and a Townsperson. Great show, lots of dancing and moving around. So far we are really liking this company and Caitlin even wants to go to their Theater Camp this summer! There are a lot of kids her ago that actually are interested in theater and not just a place to be obnoxious and hang out with friends. They are constantly singing show tunes and talking about theater stuff. It is fun to see! She has such a great new group of friends!

SCHOOL: Caitlin is loving 6th grade. It is a much better place for her than grade school was. She still doesn't have a lot of friends, but has a few and a few from theater also. She enjoys Art and Science and is very good at History! Not so much with Math and we have enrolled her in an after school program called "Math Mania" to see if it helps her. She was on the Honor Roll for the first term and we are hoping to help her grasp the division of decimals soon so she can get her Math grade back up this term to be on the Honor Roll again.

SPORTS: Sometimes she loves basketball, sometimes she hates it. I think it depends on how much sleep she had the night before....hmmmm....... Her team finished the season with 5 wins and 11 losses. We were really working on being aggressive and keeping the other teams from doing anything with the ball. She loves the "Jungle Book" movie so we started yelling "King Louie" when she would forget to keep her arms up. The last game she was all over the other girl, who kept saying "get off me", but Cait remained on her and she had to pass the ball every time because Cait wasn't letting her past.
She loves archery and loves the coach. Jeff bought her a bow for Christmas and they get out in the back yard and shoot at targets out there. I think he thinks that she will be his hunting buddy. I think not, this is the girl who will make my stop in the driveway after it rains so she can get the worms into the grass so I don't kill them! Can't see her shooting a deer, but you never know.........

GIRL SCOUTS: We are busy planning our big end of the year trip to Mackinac Island in June. We are staying in cabins for two nights. We are hanging out at Mill Creek Discovery Park where the girls will get to explore the mill, go wall climbing on a 50 ft wall, do a canopy walk through the trees, and zip line a 425 ft line over a pond. Should be big fun. Then we are off to enjoy a Lumberjack show. Then the following day we are going to the island and taking a Carriage tour of the island, going to the Butterfly Conservatory, eating at the Grand Hotel, exploring the fort and possibly staying late for a Ghost Walk/Tour. Then the third day we are taking a Lighthouse Tour, exploring Mackinaw City and maybe taking a tour of the Icebreaker. Whew, I am tired just typing about it. We have 1 girl not going because her Mom can't go...and 1 girl not going because she can't dress herself?? and when Mom asked if we could help her, I said No! I told her if the girl is not self sufficient by June then she shouldn't really go. She is 12 after all, and nothing is wrong with her except for the fact that her Mom admits to doing EVERYTHING for her.

I have been busy busy doing cookie booth stuff and badge work. We did the New Cuisine's Badge during the last meeting. The girls made salsa, hummus and Ugandan Meatballs (in honor of the shoe boxes that we packed for kids that went to Uganda at Christmas). We also sampled Chicken Shawarma and Pad Thai. They had a blast and enjoyed it all! We also had my partner Rob come in to do the Special Agent CSI badge. We did a crime scene sketch, fingerprinting, evidence collection, lie detecting, and other fun stuff. The girls said it was the best meeting EVER!

This May we are staying over night at the Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek. I am busy trying to get that planned, paid for, organized, etc...Jeff says I spend an awful lot of my time with the Girl Scout stuff. But I don't mind, especially when I know they are enjoying it!

Caitlin and I took a trip to the Detroit Zoo this winter. We had a great time. It was sooooo cold. We were surprised when we were leaving though...we looked up at the banner advertising the Summer Safari camp and saw Caitlin on it (in the blue shirt giving two thumbs up)! Of course she will be doing at least one week again this summer. She wanted to go to the traveling one that goes to all of the area zoos and then comes back to design the "perfect" habitat based on what they did or didn't like, but they cancelled it this year. So instead she is going to a Zoo Sleuth one where they will have to unravel clues all week throughout the zoo. Sounds fun.

Caitlin, her friend Olivia and I went to see the Lion King at the Detroit Opera House for her birthday. She chose that instead of a party or anything this year. It is one of her favorites and was her second time seeing it on stage. She shoveled the deck and front walk to earn money to buy herself something special there. It is one of my favorites also so we had a blast!

We went to the Detroit Parade Company for a girl scouts event. We helped work on part of the float for the Girl Scouts, made a mini float to take home, got our faces painted, dressed up in cotumes, learned a dance routine and had lunch. It was really fun. I think I was more excited than the girls. I had a great group of 9 girls with me, they were so fun to talk to and to listen to. This is Caitlin with her new friend Sydney dressed as rockin strawberries.

Well unfortunately I think I will be lucky if I post on here once a month at this point!

So much has been going on! Summer is over and Caitlin started at Middle School. We had some minor issues with opening her locker, it is a testy one that doesn' t like it if you pass the numbers. She is figuring it out though and is usually on time to her classes. She has 2 main teachers: Mrs. Camp who teaches Math and Science and Mr. Scott who teaches Social Studies and English. She really likes Mr. Scott and says he is fun and only 27 years old! Yikes! She also has PE (you cannot call it Gym because she says the teacher hates that) and Tech which is a CAD design art class. They are designing and building bridges out of wood and then they get to put them on some machine to do stress tests. She is very excited about that class. She said the only bad thing is that the HUGE 8th graders bowl them over everyday on the way to 6th hour. We didn't have any advice other than to move over and she said that wasn't helpful.

Next week is the Show Choir audition. She really wants to be in it and it sounds really fun and right up her alley. She is singing "Seize the Day" from the show Newsies for her audition. It is a solo from one of her other shows she did. The show choir is a performance choir that puts on 8 shows a year thoughout the year. They have only 24 members, so we are waiting to see if she gets it.

We both have parts in the Starlight Theater production of Fiddler on the Roof. Which of course is one of my all time favorite musicals. I am Fruma Sarah (the ghost of the dearly departed wife of Lazar Wolfe who comes from beyond the grave in a dream to scare Tevye into not letting his daughter marry my husband). It involves singing really loud and screaming and running around stage and is such a fun part, one that I have wanted to play for a long time. Caitlin is in the ensemble and gets to sing lots of songs! The shows are Friday and Sat nights at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2pm, the weekends of Oct. 19-21 and Oct. 26-28.

Caitlin also auditioned for Seussical the Musical Jr. and got the part of the Sour Kangaroo which seems like a pretty darn good part. As far as I can tell she has a couple of pretty big singing parts that are real bluesy sounding, it should be a blast for her!!! The shows are the weekend of Nov. 1-4.

Girl scouts is kicking off this weekend with a trip to tour the Parade Company in the middle of Detroit. I lost both girls who had parents that "would never let their kids go to Detroit" and were amazed and aghast that I brought Caitlin down there to do stuff (I wasn't all that sad about them choosing not to continue with me this year). The trip should be loads of fun, we have 9 girls going. They get to work on part of the very first Girl Scouts of Southeastern float that will make its debut this year; make a mask or have their faces painted; do a craft; eat lunch and tour the giant paper mache heads and floats. The other Mom chaperone and I are more excited than the girls I think!!!
We start meetings next week and I think I am going to have 15 girls, which is apparently unheard of in 6th grade Cadettes, since they start to think it is not cool. If I can get some good cookie sellers, maybe we could go to Chicago or something at the end of the year. My goal is to show them how cool scouts can be and how much great stuff we can do and what great girls they can be.

Also, Caitlin, Judy, Beth and I are going to Girl Scout night at the Fisher to see Mary Poppins after a backstage tour and meet and great with the cast! Could I be a more awesome Mom or leader?? I forwarded the info to the other parents, but didn't make it a troop event. I am doing selfish Caitlin time.....the best time ever!

Busy, busy, busy, as always here in the Thompson house! Hope all is well with all of you!

It is harder to keep up with this thing than I thought it would be!

Only 2 more weeks of summer vacation for Caitlin. She is all done with summer camp as of today and will be trying to entertain herself for the next two weeks. I took a couple of days off to hang with hr and I think Jeff will too.

Next Wednesday is 6th grade Orientation ALREADY! Ahhhh! We have not done any shopping yet because I am wiating for the list so that I do not buy things we do not need. For clothing, she will need a new jacket and jeans, but should be ok other than that. I have found that the best sales are after "back to school" anyway. For 6th grade orientation they said bring a checkbook?? We have to pay an intramural fee for afterschool activities (she wants to do show choir and art club), order the yearbook, pay for pictures, and whatever other things they have! Whew.
She is so excited to finally find out which team she is in and what her other classes will be. They have 3 different teaching teams of 3 teachers who they stay with all year. The 3 teachers teach Math, Social studies and English. Then they have Science, gym and the elective they pick (Cait picked Tech Art).

I have been busy trying to sort out the Girl Scout troop and have 8 committed so far. Plus, 4 maybes. That will be a great number to deal with, I am hoping we will be able to do a lot of great things on a small budget. I found out that the council wants $500 for camping in their lodges, which is crazy when I only have about 10 girls! So I am looking at other options. I have our first outing planned which Caitlin is really excited about....we are going to the Detroit Parade Company in Detroit to take a tour, do some fun activities and eat lunch. They are having the first ever Girl Scouts of Eastern Michigan float this year and the girls get to make a flower to go on the float. We might even have to go down to see it this year.

We have the possibility of a very dramatic fall coming up! Caitlin is trying out for Suessical the Musical at the Starlight Theater, which is the weekend of Nov 4th. She also wants to try out for Cheaper by the Dozen with the Huron Valley PADrama club, which would be the weekend of December 8th I think. Then she wants to audtion for The Little Mermaid through the same company for the Spring AND Charlotte's Web with the Huron Valley Children's Theatre which is also in the Spring. I said we will have to pick one of those I think. We are slowly getting away from the Starlight I think. The PADrama club also has theater workshops and she wants to do "how to pass an audition", so I am signing her up for that. Oh, and I am considering auditioning for Fiddle on the Roof which would be the weekend before Halloween.

It has been a busy summer so far!
Caitlin has been to Theater Camp, Detroit Zoo camp (in the 100 degree heat!), Outdoor Adventure camp, Girl Scout camp and Maine for a week! Whew! And more is to come!

We had a blast at the Huron Valley Girl Scout encampment. Caitlin got to see what real camping is about. The person who organiozes it told her thath if she can get at least 4 girls from our troop for next year, then they can help run it! she is so excited about that. It is going to be Native American themed with a real Powwow! Sounds fun.

I had my surgery on July 5th and recuperated for the past 3 weeks. Sad to go back to work....my thumb still hurts sometimes, but it seems to be healing well.

During my three weeks, we went to Maine to relax and had such fun there. We went to the Beach, Acadia National Park, took a Puffin tour, went to another beach, checked out the tidal pools, ran from the green head flies! Learned how to get mussels for dinner from some guy on the beach, ate Lobster that Robin awesomely cooked!!! We also stopped and hung out at the Howe Caverns in NewYork on the way home and took the Cave tour, rode the aipline and did the high ropes course. It was so fun, but Caitlin was glad to get home after a week to torment Neiko!
